Structural engineer near me — common questions

Quick answers to the things people ask before booking. Can't see your question? Call us on 0116 218 2917.

Is there a structural engineer near me?

Almost certainly yes. Simplify Structures covers 60+ towns across the East and West Midlands from our Leicester (LE18) office, including Leicester, Birmingham, Nottingham, Derby, Coventry, Northampton, Milton Keynes, Peterborough, Bedford and Tamworth. Our chartered engineers visit every major town in our coverage area at least once a week, so most homeowners get a site visit within the same working week.

How quickly can a structural engineer visit my property?

For standard inspections in our core coverage area (a 50-mile radius around Leicester), most site visits are booked within 3–7 working days. Urgent visits — for example when a buyer or solicitor has set a deadline — can usually be arranged sooner. We respond to enquiries the same or next working day, typically within 2 hours.

How much does a structural engineer cost in my area?

Our prices are fixed and the same across our entire coverage area: from £450 + VAT for wall-removal calculations, £480 + VAT for a single-concern structural inspection (SSI), and £585 + VAT for a full house structural inspection (GSI). A small Zone C surcharge of +£96 applies at the very edge of our coverage area and will always be confirmed in your quote before you book.

Do you cover my postcode?

We cover all LE, NN, CV, MK, NG, DE, B, WS, OX and PE postcodes within roughly 50 miles of Leicester. If you are not sure, call 0116 218 2917 with your postcode and we will confirm immediately. Pages exist for individual towns including Leicester, Loughborough, Hinckley, Coventry, Rugby, Northampton, Kettering, Nottingham, Derby, Birmingham, Tamworth, Milton Keynes, Bedford and Peterborough.

Are your structural engineers chartered?

Yes. All reports and calculations are signed off by chartered structural engineers (CEng MICE). This is the qualification mortgage lenders, insurers, solicitors and Building Control departments expect to see on a structural report.

Will Building Control accept calculations from a structural engineer outside my immediate area?

Yes. Building Control departments across England and Wales work from the same Building Regulations and accept calculations from any chartered structural engineer registered in the UK. Where you are located does not affect whether your calculations are approved — what matters is that they are correct, signed by a chartered engineer, and presented in the format Building Control expect.

Why hire a local structural engineer rather than a national firm?

A local engineer can usually be on site faster, knows the typical construction in your area (Victorian terraces, post-war bungalows, modern timber-frame builds, ironstone in Northants, brick-and-stone in Leicestershire) and can answer follow-up questions without long delays. Local also means lower travel cost, which is one reason our prices are fixed rather than based on travel time.

Need a structural engineer in your area?

Send us your postcode and we'll confirm availability and the likely next step. We aim to respond same or next working day, typically within 2 hours.
